With two million visitors a year, or almost 10 per cent of the total number of tourist arrivals in the whole country, the Greek island of Santorini has become one of the most popular tourist destinations. There are currently 75 airlines offering flights to Santorini, with up to 57 people a day reaching the island during the summer months. Visitors also arrive on cruise ships that dock at Santorini from March to December, dropping off up to 25,000 people a day. The island has come very close to achieving its goal of year-round tourism. In the winter of 2015-2016, around 100 hotels were open, representing one-eighth of the island's total accommodation capacity.
